Dr. Chris Villanueva recently gave a rare interview in which he discussed MB2 Dental. MB2 Dental is a company he founded that was designed to give dentists the support and resources a regular corporate entity would give them, but without the usual strings that are attached that hold them back from success.
He talked about how MB2 Dental had been through some tough times, as all companies are at some time. However, during those times, he got to see the character of his workers and partners. They have stuck together and stuck to their principles in order to overcome any bumps and obstacles in the way. Integrity has to be the center of your business. You should also build your infrastructure sooner rather than later.
When asked what was one thing he does over and over again as an entrepreneur, Dr. Villanueva explained that he gives himself time for self reflection every day. For him, a vacation is just vacating your regular schedule and life and your regular thoughts. By doing this, he is able to appreciate the simplicity and the pleasure of his day to day life when he returns to normal.
When asked what was one strategy that helped him grow his business and how it helped him, Dr. Villanueva explained that he made a choice at the beginning that his business was going to be built on people, meaning the doctors, and not on real estate or marketing ideas. If you are a dentist who serves a community, it is all about the people in your practice.
When asked what was one failure he had as an entrepreneur and how he overcame it, Dr. Villanueva explained that he and three other dentists decided to open a pizza place next to their practice. However, it did not work out, and it did not get all the customers they thought it would get. What he learned from it was that he needed to stick to what he knew best and not run after every new opportunity and shiny object, so to speak.
When asked what is one business idea he is ready to give over to others, he replied that he has a child who has a severe food allergy to sesame and nuts. The idea would be to have some sort of resource that would create a map of the world from an allergy perspective, like showing which restaurants are safe to go to.
